FAQ’s about Chiropractic Care

Do you have a question about chiropractic care and how it could help you?

We have listed the most frequently asked questions (FAQS) that we receive in our practice.

If you have any other questions, please contact us. We will do our best to get back with the answer ASAP.

What happens when I visit the Chiropractor?

best chiropractic reportThe goal of your initial visit is to determine what is going on with you, how it happened and how we can help.

We do a thorough exam and case history first.

Once we have all the information necessary, we sit down and discuss our findings in plain English and offer appropriate treatment options available to you before commencing any treatment.

You will understand everything, and there will be no surprises. We will get your permission (consent) before doing anything to you.

Is chiropractic care safe?

best chiropractor examination proceduresChiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints.

Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects.

The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are minimal. Some patients feel experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise.

Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

Some reports have associated high-velocity upper neck manipulation with a particularly rare kind of stroke, or vertebral artery dissection.

However, evidence suggests that this type of arterial injury often takes place spontaneously in patients who have pre-existing arterial disease.

The best evidence indicates that the incidence of artery injuries associated with high-velocity upper neck manipulation is extremely rare—about one to three cases in 100,000 patients who get treated with a course of care, which is similar to the incidence of this type of stroke among the general population.

Our Chiropractors are highly trained professionals who have undergone an extensive five-year university degree. The purpose of our physical examination is to assess your condition and discover if chiropractic can assist you.

Chiropractors are trained to identify patients who have special risk factors and to refer those patients to the most appropriate medical specialist.

If we believe that chiropractic care can help you, we will discuss with you the most appropriate technique for your condition.

Do I have a slipped disc?

stages to a disc herniation. Normal, Degeneration, Prolapse, Extrusion, SequestrationThe disc is a soft pulpy “shock absorber” located between the two vertebrae. It has a fibrous outer ring which holds in a jelly-like material.

A slipped disc is a common way to refer to a wide variety of disc problems.

However, a disc can’t slip because of the way it attaches to the spinal bones above and below it.

A disc can bulge, tear, herniate, thin, dry out, and it can collapse. It definitely can’t “slip out of place”.

Find out more detailed information about disc problems.

Do I have a pinched nerve?

This is a common misconception. Low back pain or neck pain may feel as if something is “pinched” however this is rarely the case.

The likely scenario is that there is a mechanical cause of the pain such as a joint strain or swelling in the region of the joint which can be helped with chiropractic care, which is why an accurate diagnosis is so important before.

Do I need a medical referral?

No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to make an appointment.

A Chiropractor is a primary contact health care practitioner.

You can contact us directly for an appointment on (07) 3282 4478.

Do I need x-rays?

best chiropractor xray reportAt your examination, your chiropractor will determine if x-rays are required.

If x-rays are necessary, you will be given a referral to a local x-ray clinic.

Medicare fully covers these costs usually.

If you have had any spinal x-rays, bring them with you on your first visit as this will help determine the best treatment for you.

What is the popping sound?

Some adjusting methods can produce a popping sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift. It is much like opening a bottle of champagne or removing a suction cup.

The sound is not a guide to the quality or need of the adjustment It is a common misconception that the noise is bones going back in place or rubbing on each other, which is false.

Does it hurt to get adjusted?

DOES IT HURT TO GET ADJUSTED?An adjustment is not usually painful.

In some cases, mild soreness to the area adjusted may follow, which is typically a regular part of the healing process where an area of the spine has been restricted for an extended period is now moving better.

It can be almost like how you feel when you exercise after not doing so for a while and you know something has been done.

Most people feel great after being adjusted and many feel immediate pain relief and better movement and strength.

How many adjustments will I need?

Every patient is individually assessed and a customised management plan is given depending on your diagnosis and your health goals.

Some patients require initial intensive treatment over many weeks, followed by rehabilitation and then maintenance adjustments, whereas others may only require a short course of adjustments to resolve their problems.

We explained and the choice as to how to proceed is always up to you.

How long until I feel better?

HOW LONG UNTIL I FEEL BETTER?While some patients experience almost instant relief, nearly all patients are feeling better in one to two weeks.

Many factors affect your rate of healing such as your age, the type of injury, your general health and how long you have had the problem.

Every person is different, and so rates of healing will differ.

Will I have to go to a chiropractor forever?

How long you choose to see a Chiropractor is always up to you.

We will explain the objectives of each phase of care and the optimum approach needed to achieve the results of each phase at your first visit.

Once you have this information, it is your decision to choose how to proceed based on your health goals.

Are you just looking for a band-aid or do you want us to try and turn you into a superwoman or superman?

Can I adjust myself?

No. Some people can make their joints “pop”, but that is not an adjustment.

Cracking your spine is not the same as having your chiropractor assess your spine and specifically adjust selected joints.

Worse damage can occur by injuring a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments if you are not careful. Even your chiropractor cannot adjust themselves.

Is it ok to see a chiropractor if I am pregnant?

Yes, it is okay for an expecting mother to see a Chiropractor and we have many pregnant mums, new mums and babies that receive chiropractic care.

Some mothers find that chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy helped with their back pain and other related musculoskeletal pain.

Our adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age, and condition of health to provide the most suitable care.

Will osteoporosis prevent me from getting chiropractic care?

Osteoporosis will not prevent you from getting chiropractic care and we treat many patients who suffer from it.

Regular chiropractic care may help to protect patients from falls (and therefore osteoporotic fractures) by optimising joint mobility, the range of motion, balance and muscle tone.

When addressing spinal problems with patients suffering from osteoporosis we use specific low force techniques that allow for the brittleness and fragility of the bones but still can be very effective in producing results.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe for children?

ARE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS SAFE FOR CHILDREN?Learning to walk, riding a bicycle, and other childhood activities can potentially cause spinal health related problems.

While a bandage, some comforting words and hugs can help the bruises, often damage to spine function is not detected.

Sometimes childhood health complaints that are brushed off as “growing pains” can also be traced to the spine.

Regular chiropractic check-ups for children may be able to identify these problems and help avoid some of the health complaints seen later in adults.

Chiropractic adjusting procedures are always modified to a child’s spine.

Can I tell if my spine is working properly?

Unfortunately, you generally cannot tell if your spine is working properly.

While spinal problems will eventually cause many symptoms, they can often be present and undetected for a long time.

Pain is a useful thing as it usually tells us when something is wrong.

However, you can have pain and still be quite healthy.

Equally many serious health conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease can be present without any pain.

You may not notice something as simple as not being able to turn your head properly to reverse the car or not being able to bend down and pick something up off the floor.

We recommend periodic chiropractic checkups to detect and correct spinal changes for patients that are not experiencing any obvious symptoms.

What if getting my neck treated makes me nervous?

There are techniques we can use to help neck problems that do not involve manipulation.

We will only include neck adjustments in your treatment if there is an objective clinical reason for doing so and if you are comfortable with it. Ultimately it is your body and you are in control.

We do not include neck adjustments in your treatment if there are any indications that you would be at increased risk.

Talk to us about your concerns.

Can I have chiropractic care after spinal surgery?
Yes. We regularly treat many patients who have had spinal surgery. Many patients who have had surgery still experience pain and loss of spinal function in their everyday life. Specific types of treatment are designed that avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine (if necessary) and correct and maintain the rest of your spinal function.
Is chiropractic care covered by Medicare?

Under Medicare’s Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program (also known as Chronic Disease Management (CDM)) patients may be covered for up to five chiropractic visits per year for a chronic condition.

Patients must be referred by a GP.

Please feel free to speak to us further about this option. We currently do not charge a gap for these visits, so they are effectively “bulk-billed”.

Is Chiropractic Care covered by Workers Compensation and Veterans Affairs?

IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE COVERED BY WORKERS COMPENSATION AND VETERANS AFFAIRS?Patients with a Work Cover injury first need to see their GP and get a referral to the Chiropractor.

Your work supervisor needs to lodge the necessary papers concerning your injury along with the GP referral to Work Cover.

Work Cover will assess the claim and if accepted will allocate a claim number.

When the claim number is available, your chiropractor can forward the cost of your visits directly to Work Cover.

We are accredited as a provider for DVA and welcome all veterans seeking care either privately or through DVA.

Veterans wishing to see a Chiropractor who has a white card also need a referral from their GP including the condition being treated.

A GP referral is valid for 12 months, after which time a new GP referral is required.

At your first appointment, we also need to collect details from your DVA Card, so we claim directly from DVA electronically on the spot.

Gold Card holders do not need a referral from their GP and are covered for Chiropractic care.
